Savoring Summer: How The Salad Fork Stays a Seasonal Staple in Charlevoix
The Salad Fork has a variety of fresh, healthy, delicious meals - ready to take with you on your Northern Michigan adventure!
Charlevoix summers are synonymous with sunshine, lake breezes, and vibrant local flavor and, for the past seven seasons, The Salad Fork has been right in the heart of it all. Owned and operated by Karey Scholten, The Salad Fork has become a go-to spot in downtown Charlevoix for fresh, seasonal fare that reflects both Karey’s creativity and her love of the community.
Karey was referred to Venture North by a representative from the Charlevoix Downtown Development Authority (DDA) who recognized the value The Salad Fork brings to the area and the challenges that come with running a business so closely tied to the summer season. After choosing to keep the business open year-round for the first time this past winter, Karey faced some unexpected financial strain. That’s where Venture North stepped in.
Working closely with Annie Olds, Venture North’s Business Development & Program Director, Karey was able to secure a small business loan, which included funds to refinance existing debt and purchase some needed equipment. This financing helped provide much-needed breathing room as Karey prepared for her busiest time of the year.
“We really see Karey as someone with a clear vision and an unwavering commitment to her business,” said Annie Olds. “She’s got a fantastic location, a loyal customer base, and an eye for fresh, simple food that really resonates with locals and visitors alike. We’re confident that The Salad Fork will continue to grow and thrive over many more Charlevoix summers.”
Paninis, açaí bowls, avocado toast, homemade soup…fresh and ready at 217 Bridge St., Suite B. Charlevoix or order online!
Thanks to this funding, Karey has been able to retain five jobs and is looking to add two new positions to her team, a critical boost during the peak season when demand is at its highest and staffing remains a challenge for many small businesses in the region.
What makes The Salad Fork unique – beyond its delicious salads, wraps, and seasonal specials – is its intentionally seasonal business model. Karey closes the doors after Labor Day weekend, allowing her to reset, rest, and regroup before another busy summer. That rhythm has not only worked well for her lifestyle but has also made the restaurant a must-visit tradition for summer tourists and a dependable staple for locals.
At Venture North, we’re proud to support entrepreneurs like Karey – dedicated, community-focused, and always looking for ways to grow sustainably. Small businesses like The Salad Fork are what make our northern Michigan towns so special - and keep us hungry for more!
