With “Where Timeless Wisdom Meets Contemporary Bliss” as a business tag line, Nick Olson has two goals for the Nordic Sauna experience he offers at his Traverse City and new Elk Rapids locations. Simply put, he wants guests to feel better and have fun.
His business, Hearth Sauna, a traditional Nordic sauna experience, does that in a clean, cedar sauna where you can breathe, relax, and make friends. You can choose to cycle between sauna, cold plunges, hydration and then repeat at your own pace. You’ll often experience this in a swimsuit or similar garb, storing clothing in a cubby, using a changing room if needed.
It’s a “3rd Space” experience focused uniquely on health and connection that Olson offers to an increasing number of clients – about three times as many as his inaugural year in 2025.
His business goals are affirmed by the people he serves. One says their arthritis has never been less painful. Another reports the sauna experience lessens their depression. Many say the experience is soothing, good for the soul and fosters new, lasting friendships.
“Our sauna is synonymous with stress control,” said Olson. “But it is also a way to boost heart health, hasten muscle recovery and give you a healthful glow – the benefits are more than you might expect.”

Olson’s move to a new location – Elk Rapids – has been met with encouragement! One of the biggest boosters is the Elk Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce and their Executive Director Jean Derenzy.
“Hearth Sauna is such a great example of the creativity, entrepreneurship and energy that makes our community special,” she said. “Nick has a real passion for what he is building, and it has been exciting to watch Hearth Sauna grow and see the positive response from the community. I’ve truly enjoyed getting to know Nick, supporting his vision, and cheering him on as he continues to grow the business right here in the Elk Rapids area.”
Olson is thinking big and bold in planning for the future.
“We’ve recently added a ‘custom home build’ component to our business, enabling homeowners to have their own Nordic sauna with quality and pricing much better than what we find on the market,” he said. “We love the idea of extending these benefits and the fun it provides to families everywhere. People can simply email me if they’re interested.” Olson adds that they’re readying a rental unit as well for special events and occasions.
Olson says that the Nordic sauna is timeless in its design, features and experiences it supports.
“We want to play our part in making our region known for health and happiness,” Olson says. “After all, our Finnish and other Nordic partners consistently rate high in the best places to live and raise a family. We think we can all work together to do that right here.”

A high-quality Nordic sauna and cold plunge
