From Eagle Scouts to Shark Tank: Traverse City Brothers Dakota and Garret Porter Make Shark Tank Appearance Nov. 18

“On my honor, I will do my best…”

The time-tested words of the Scout oath endure as guideposts for two Traverse City brothers who will join millions on Friday, November 18 at 8 p.m. (EST) to watch themselves vie for investment in their business on the ABC reality television series “Shark Tank.”

They are the “ActionGlow Brothers,” Dakota (age 27) and Garret (age 24) Porter. They and their business, ActionGlow, manufacture and sell patented LED lighting systems for aftermarket adaptation to sporting equipment like snowboards, skis, longboards, bikes, wakesurf boards, stand-up paddle boards, surfboards, and kayaks.

“We would not be where our business is today without the support of hundreds of people,” said Garret Porter. “And, after our parents, the experiences we had and the values we learned in Scouts, including earning our Eagle Scout badges, gave us the confidence, courage and will to build our business beginning when we were ages 13 and 16,” said Garret Porter. “We learned how to organize, complete projects and sell things for a worthy case while being trustworthy, courteous and thrifty. It's true that the Scout oath and law transfers to most everything in our lives and business today.”

“We agreed that this would be our final shot at Shark Tank after three other attempts,” said brother Dakota. “We came close on attempts two and three. On this, our fourth application, we vowed to pull out all the stops in our application to Shark Tank. We felt elated, humble and grateful all at once when we heard we made it. Grateful because credit for our progress is shared with our parents and so many others.”

On November 18, millions will watch as Dakota and Garret make their pitch to the Shark Tank Cast: Mark Cuban, Robert Herjavec, Barbara Corcoran, Lori Greiner and Kevin (Mr. Wonderful) O’Leary. They sought Shark Tank support for dramatically expanding marketing for their patented ActionGlow LED lighting system with the added twist of changing into nine colors on the fly. The two brothers admit to leaning toward Cuban and Herjavec as ideal partners; Cuban because he is owner of the Dallas Mavericks and has technology investments and Herjavec since technology is a primary focus of his business portfolio.

But what happens next is anyone’s guess until it airs on November 18. When asked how well they think they did, the brothers simply say “great!”, which builds even more suspense.

Cristina and Dane Porter, mother and father, talk about pride, lessons learned, hard work and old-fashioned family togetherness when speaking about their sons’ accomplishments.

Mom Cristina Porter’s parenting advice? “Get them outdoors.”

“Throughout all of this, beginning over a dozen years ago at their lemonade stand and when they graduated into selling hand-carved walking sticks, we encouraged them to ‘go for it’,” they say.

“As parents, we can’t do enough to encourage, support and listen to our kids while spending quality time together,” said Dane. “Through fishing, hunting, scouts and coaching sports, we experienced things together that will last a lifetime.”

When asked for advice about getting children unpeeled from electronics, Cristina has three short words: “Get them outdoors.”

“They also learned by seeing their parents working hard every day,” she said. “While we did what we could, the boys learned early on that it was up to them to be responsible for their own course. Scouts had such a positive impact by teaching them the building blocks to success.”

“As young men, we also know that some of their decisions reflected a ‘what’s the worst that can happen optimism,” Cristina chuckles.

The Porter boys may have needed to incorporate the business in their parent’s names as their status as minors made them ineligible to own a Michigan business, but they didn’t let their age stop them from hustling to raise money any way they could. They collected neighbors’ pop cans to pay for their LLC and sought out Traverse-area businesses willing to pay to have their logos posted on a promotional ‘Making Dreams Come True’ sign to display at various business-related events.

What they didn’t know, they reached out to others who might. Garret, in fact, points to this as one of the keys to their success, “Just asking for help, asking questions.” They recruited volunteer mentors to help them with legal, planning and financing and eventually became the youngest members ever at the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.

“We were proud to offer our support to the Porter sons and their family at an early stage,” says Laura Galbraith, President of Venture North Funding and Development. “We provided them with affordable loan capital beginning nine yeas ago, in 2013. As their business grew, our help grew with them and we provided more capital in 2016 and again in 2022, most recently to help them ramp up inventory levels in anticipation of customer response with the airing on Shark Tank. Our partnership with the Porters will always be a wonderful exemplar for us about entrepreneurial accomplishment, driven by character, integrity and innovation as well as carefully thought-out plans.”

Formed in 2010, Venture North has helped over 1,500 businesses in northwest Michigan through affordable, flexible lending, mini grants and business consulting services (www.venturenorthfunding.org). As a certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI), Venture North places priority on allocating resources to businesses in economically distressed areas and is one of few sources of working capital for startup businesses.

The Porter brothers are accompanied by dedicated parents and a legion of extended family members.

Among their plans is to take their own piece of art, a professionally painted school bus, on a national tour to promote entrepreneurism. They also have a plan to jump with both feet into philanthropy, supported with proceeds from a project they will lead to regain Traverse City’s distinction as having created the world’s largest Cherry Pie.

Their energy and enthusiasm are infectious, their dedication and accomplishments are becoming legendary.

And underlying it all is the unconditional love and support of family and the legacy of the Scout oath to “help people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.”
